I have an intersectional/multimodal approach to Latina/o literature across such forms as fiction, nonfiction, comics, television, and film. My work sits at the nexus of narrative form and audience engagement, with careful attention to issues of representation and identity positions. In my scholarship I also call attention to the cognitive and emotive power narratives have on engaging audiences. Because it is rooted in the meeting of narrative texts and readers, my theoretical framework allows me the freedom and mobility to undertake rigorous examinations of narrative forms and literary traditions from a position that considers both formal and cultural matters as crucial manifestations and sites of storytelling practices and their inherent power. As an educator, my teaching philosophy is to edify my students no matter their skill level, to put first what best serves the students, and to strive to provide them with the tools needed for self-empowerment through self-expression.
