The BNSF's mainline along the Front Range
routes rail traffic directly through the middle of town enroute between Denver, CO, and
Cheyenne, WY. These are a few pictures of, and commentaries about, the BNSF railroad
scene in and around Fort Collins.
Enjoy!

BNSF mainline across Spring Creek in Fort Collins. On July 28, 1997, the worst flood in the city's history occured. This is the location of the deadliest chain of events. As the water began to rise, debris blocked the culvert under the railroad transforming the embankment into a dam. Flood waters quickly formed a large lake to the left (re: pictures). After nightfall, water reached the top of the "dam" causing it to give way, sweeping several railcars off of these tracks and causing a giant wall of water to come down on a moblie home park which was situated in the trees to the right (downstream side) of the tracks. The result was total destruction in the mobile home park and many structures downstream. The former mobile home park is now being transformed into a community park in memory of the tragic event.
A pair of SanfaFe's, led by #904, carry a mixed train across Spring Creek on the BNSF.

Horsepower of a Different Color... Most of the EMD units I run across are blue, like the one following this one. Occasionally I run across something that seems a little outside the norm. EMD #204, shown here in red, white, and gray, was such an animal. EMD is the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors. Now that's one BIG Chevy! ;-)
Here, the consist crosses Mulberry St. as they move the train northward through downtown.
BN #6823, followed by BN #7054 and two more of their
closest friends, pull a mixed freight southward on Mason Street across Laurel Street. This picture was featured as the October 1998 Photo of the Month at Trains Magazine Online |

trainspotting in the Fort Collins area, you might want to monitor 161.160MHz. (BNSF
