12/5 So what did you learn. Our last class included a chilly visit, returning to the Heritage Garden where we started this class. We would've had S'Mores, but Josh forgot the matches.

Now, send me an electronic copy of your Learning Contract, in MS Word compatible form, please.

Next week, Oct 24, any or all are invited to join the Glad Grad students while we glean insights through reviewing all the Learning Contracts, looking for themes, modalities, common ideas, etc.

I am on campus and available for consultation on Wed, 10/31. I am off campus on 10/7. No regular class meeting until Wed, 10/14.

Use this time well - be wise. Go into the field and accomplish the task(s) you have set your hand to. Do good work, write home often.

10/17 Visit the Northeast Texas Children's Museum http://www.netxcm.org/ 4.30 - 6.00 pm

Thanks to all who joined us at the Northeat Texas Children's Museum. I will add some resources at eCollege, and on our class website. I encourage you to join the discussion on eCollege to reflect on what we saw, did, created, and considered while at the Museum.

Work on Learning Contracts

Consider a visit to the Children's Museum - see Schedule.rtf

9/26 Montessori Day - Guest speaker: Norma Morris, Lakeland Academy
9/19 Note: Running Record assignment postponed from 9/12 to 9/19.

What a running record might look like:

Describe the situation, a physical description, setting, age & stage, others present

Specifics: what she said, what she wanted, what she did

Interactions with other children

Reaction to new settings

Time is variable = spend some time watching kids, writing down what you see

Let your questions from the KWL on your Age/Stage group be your guide

Suggestion: use a Blue Book exam book to take field notes in

Malaguzzi (1990) No Way. The Hundred is There .ppt

Hi, all, It's 10:20 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept 5, a wet and slippery day. Our class meets at 4:30 p.m. - hope you can make it - but I want you to individually discern and decide if you can make it safely. So be at peace - no penalty if you don't make it to my class (you have to take it up with other profs if you miss their classes);>} Just let me know - do keep in touch.

What are you excited about? What do you need more info about? What is not cool? Here are the notes posted in class on 9/5:

Learning more about Montessori

Just excited about learning more. Not sure yet about what I want to know more. Everything's cool so far.

?

The classroom is evolving at at fast rate . . . What place does technology have in an ECE environment? What about independent learning/centers with computer workstations for the kids? What about health issues related to computer use (EMFs)? Our son used learning software & easily learned to read by playing on the computer (limited time) ... I think computers could be good if used in a limited capacity.

Are there answers to the practice questions in the book somewhere?

I don't feel like this class is very organized. I feel uncomfortable with assignments left in the air. With a full load, and work, I like to know what to expect to plan my time accordingly.

I need more set plans. I like knowing what is expected of me in advance.

Please don't move pictures around so much when using the ELMO. It gives me motion sickness.

I have an issue with observations. I attend school 3 days a week and don't arrive home until 9pm (I commute). I teach on Tues. & Thurs. I don't have time to view schools.

Heritage Gardens (in the rain!)
Reflect on the stated objective - why did we go into the garden? Our goal was to practice observing a new environment, and to think about the powers of observation that we used there. Consider these questions we generated in class (you do not have to answer them, just use them as prompts: What was your feeling when we first walked in? How did the rain make you feel? What type of discussions did you have while in the garden? What were you thinking? What do you remember about an experience like this? How can you duplicate the natural environment in your classroom? How did you feel after you came back from our field trip? What would you change about it? Add or subtract? Would you go back? Where else do you want to go?

Type your reflection in eCollege: 364: Week One: Discussion
