Welcome
I am an astronomer with a research focus of cataclysmic variable stars, astrophysical fluid dynamics, and white dwarf evolution. As of October 2024, I'm serving as the Scientific Director of the Center for Backyard Astrophysics (CBA), a worldwide network of mostly small photometric telescopes operated by a dedicated cadre of amateur observers, able to study periodic phenomena with great thoroughness and freedom from cycle-count ambiguity. A clock is a storyteller to those willing to listen to the ticking, and we in the CBA are the ones minding the clockworks of the cataclysmic variable stars. You can learn more about the CBA at cbastro.org.
East Texas A&M University (formerly Texas A&M University Commerce) is a member of the Southeastern Association for Research in Astronomy (SARA) Telescope Consortium. SARA consists of 13 university members who jointly operate three 1-meter class research-grade telescopes at premier observatories around the globe (SARA-KP in Arizona, USA; SARA-RM on La Palma, Canary Islands, Spain; and SARA-CT in Chile). Our membership provides ~60 nights per year of remote access to consortium telescopes for our students and faculty. We also operate two PlaneWave telescopes (0.7-m and 0.6-m) at our Campus Observatory located about 5 miles south of Commerce, Texas.
I am the author of Python and Matplotlib Essentials for Scientists and Engineers, available here.
