Grading Participation/Attendance (English 110)

A large portion of the daily grades for English 110 will come from attendance and participation. You will receive no credit for participation if you are not here, of course, as you cannot participate unless you are present to do so.

If you are not here, you will receive a zero for participation If you are here, your tutor will likely record your "participation" thus:

1 or A:    Student participated quite enthusiastically, contributing to the discussion, offering insightful feedback, thoughtful responses to questions, and so on. Student obviously prepared for his meeting, bringing all requisite materials and demonstrating deep familiarity with the reading/writing assigned. An "A" or a "1" means you have not only met but far exceeded expectations.

2 or B:    Student participated less well than the "A/1" student, but did a beautiful job today nonetheless. Very enthusiastic, and clearly above average in his insightful responses and level of preparation for today.

3 or C:   Student participated in ways that reveal he has prepared for today, but did not really seem to participate any more than was minimally required.

4 or D:    Student was not quite prepared. Perhaps not really getting involved, even when prodded to do so. May even be missing requisite material.

5 or F:    Student was completely unprepared and/or perhaps even disruptive. Your tutor has the right to sent you away if you are completely unprepared and/or disruptive. If that happens, you will not receive credit for the day as you will not have participated.

Your tutor will likely record THREE things each meeting: (1) Attendance, (2) participation score, and (3) some quick notes about the meeting, including what your tutor should remember about today in order to proceed effectively next time and in order to accurately report your score at Midterm and at the end of the semester.
