Due for Tues:  read Chaps. 1-3 and start preparing 4:00 minute speech based on in-class information.  NOTE: if you are late to class when something is due, the item is LATE, and has grade penalties (see syllabus).

LOOK AHEAD to due dates and in-class project dates, like the Group Project--if you miss it, you miss the chance to earn this grade.  Review syllabus regarding all issues of late submissions, missing speeches, etc.

Beginning process of selecting Informative and Persuasive Speeches today:  Due at start of class Tuesday -- bring a typed list of your four proposed speech topics.  For Speech One--list the proposed three people you will talk about; for Speech Two, list three different topics you believe you could give an inspirational / motivational speech about, that would have emotional reasoning to change your audience's beliefs about something; for Speech Three- the 10-minute Informative, list three topics and for Speech Four -the 10-minute Persuasive, list three topics.  


Day 2,  12/18/12      Chaps. 1-4 covered   

9:00--Typed list of all four speech proposals is due at the start of class. 

Chapters 1-3 PowerPoint; Informative Speech 1 described.  Intro Speech preparation / Speech samples.  Prepare a 4-minute Informative Speech for Thursday.  Create a single page outline and a note card, typed, due Wed. via email / Thursday at 9 am as hard copy.  All email submissions: submitted ONLY to rtv309@yahoo.com and ONLY as attached .doc or .rtf or .pdf file. (incorrect submission counts as not submitted).  The subject of the email, and the name of the attached file must be YourName ProjectName ContentName (like BobSmith Speech1 Outline.doc)

Start working on creation of a THESIS STATEMENT, SPECIFIC PURPOSE and MAIN POINTS for Speech 1.

Assignment: finish Chaps. 1-8 / Full sentence outline style   Note Card style  One APA style guide and Purdue OWL

You should already be working on creation of a THESIS STATEMENT, SPECIFIC PURPOSE and MAIN POINTS for Speech 1.  After Wednesday's discussion of research, you should now be looking more closely for good sources and thinking of applying that to future speeches as well.

Speech prep terms and ideas:  What constitutes plagiarism in a speech?  5 steps of public speaking, encoding, decoding, channel, feedback, noise.  What is 'evidence?'  Where do we find sources for a speech?  Citing sources in a speech.  Number or references and making a reference list.  ORGANIZATION:   main ideas, transitions,  attention-getter and overview in introduction.  Specific purpose and thesis statement.  DELIVERY:  varied inflection instead of monotone or constant vocal pattern, varied rate, varied projection / loudness, avoiding 'clutter words'-- (um, like, you know); posture and movement (don't shift feet, don't lean on the lectern): appropriate and comfortable movement and gestures, appropriate eye contact, avoiding distracting mannerisms (swinging arm, foot tapping, hitting the lectern, nervous laughter....)

FINAL DRAFT OUTLINE AND NOTE CARD.  The HARD COPY of each of these is due no later than 9:00 am Thursday -- and is late if either not submitted on time (late to class or not ready to turn in by start of class time means late).  Loose pages must be stapled BEFORE 9:00 am class time.  This grading sheet must be stapled on top of outline and note card attached on top of all pages.  Note card must be a 4x6 typed note card.  Handwritten cards may not be used.  Note cards not done as assigned may not be used and/or will cause grade reduction.  Only note cards turned in at the start of class may be used for your speech.  In class, do not come to pick up your note card until called upon to deliver your speech.  If you use a different note card it will cause loss of points on the speech.

We may begin introducing some ideas about group communication this week -- with reading to be done for next week, Tuesday and Wednesday for in-class group project.  That content will, however, be covered on Test 2.
   

Day 4, 12/20/12   

9:00 am -- Hard Copy Speech Outline and Note Card Due at 9 am, Informative Speech 1
ALSO--bring 4 copies of this page for evaluating speakers (it IS NOT the same as the one you attach to your speech outline)--and keep those separate from your outline submission.  If you do not provide thorough evaluations, it will have a major impact on your daily & evaluations grade.  If you are late to class on a speech day, or late coming back from a break, you lose points on your speech grade. Remember a good evaluation includes lots of comments--using terms and concepts based on what we have learned in class, not just a number score.

Complete Chapters 4-8 and look ahead to Chap. 21 and other chapters as guides to preparation and presentation.  Interview job ad due by today (emailed).  See subject and file name guidelines as noted above.  If it is a link, simply send the link as the message of the email with your name and a summary of the job used to introduce the link.

FINALIZE ALL SPEECH TOPICS -- go to the library and/or contact them for help with any research assistance you need for the Motivational or Informative Speech.  They will be closed next week.



Day 5, Friday  12/21/12

Submit your rough draft résumé today or Saturday--see next Friday about final draft submission along with job ad and business analysis.

Chapters 1-8 and class notes.  Late arrivals lose 10 points; arrival after 9:15 receives a zero.  Bring a green Scantron sheet and pencils.

9:45 --  Begin PowerPoint of Chapters 9-14; 32 & 35. 

Finalize Motivational Speech topic for next week. 
Begin work on a topic outline of Motivational (pattern: Attention, Need, Satisfaction, Visualization, Call to Action -- the 'Motivated Sequence'--see textbook) ... and Informative Speech topic outline -- both due by Monday.  A Topic Outline gives an initial starting plan for content of a speech, as a rough draft of main planned ideas, and would look something like this.  Motivated Sequence is also summarized here, and has topics that deal with issues like -- Career Choice - Challenge - Change - Coaching - Commitment - Communication - Competence - Competitiveness - Confidence - Decision Making - Discipline - Effective Meetings - Ensuring Safety - Ergonomics - Focused Thinking - The Future - Involvement - Inspiration - Integrity - Interpersonal Skills - Leadership - Negotiation Tactics - Personal Effectiveness - Personal Growth - Personal Improvement - Personal Productivity - Personal Wellness - Responsibility - Self Respect - Setting Realistic Goals - Stress - Teambuilding - Teamwork - Trends - Values - Work Ethics -- and similar ideas.

Week 2  -- Group communication, dyadic communication and 'mock job interview' preparation

Dec. 24     -- Read Chapters 9-14; 32 & 35.  Do online research for your Motivational and Informative Speeches.  Submit the topic outline for Motivational Speech by today.  You have class time today to do this work.  Citing sources in a speech (see textbook Section 7 – sample speeches).  APA style references list.  Submit a topic outline of Motivational by today – to rtv309@yahoo.com -- See subject and file name guidelines as noted above. 

Tuesday -- Christmas Holiday

AND REMEMBER: All speeches must be your own work -- using 'sample speeches' copied from the Internet or a speech prepared for another class (by you or someone else) is plagiarism.  Speech sources must be mostly from 2010-2012, and must be ones you looked up yourself for this assignment.  Speech content will be evaluated using on online plagiarism-checking system and by other means. Plagiarizing a speech causes failure of the course.  A good speech is about the right preparation as much as it is about the right delivery.

(2) Work should have been done for the Informative speech so if time is available Thursday during class, you will be able to submit a rough draft outline and beginning references before departing Thursday.  This changes the originally-posted weekend deadline.

(3) As before, use the online sample questions to start your studying process for Test 2 that is at 9:30 Thursday, but also see the online course outline and read through and study all major terms and ideas in those chapters.

Hard copy Motivational Speech final outline and note card due at 9:30 am THURSDAY
You must have 3-4 references, list them in the outline where they will be cited and have a References page, all done in the correct format as shown on the sample outline and APA style linked above.  THE HARD COPY YOU BRING TO CLASS INCLUDES:  Print out and staple this page to the top of the outline, followed by your outline pages, with the References page last.  With these all stapled, and with a heading on the first page of your outline that includes your name, you must then ATTACH, using a paper clip or similar device, your note card(s) -- that must have your name on it, to the top of these stapled pages.  All these things must have been done BEFORE 9:00 class time, so it is all ready to turn in at 9:00--not ready means your submission is late.  KEEP A COPY OF ANYTHING YOU MIGHT NEED, but all you can use during the speech is the note card you turn in -- if it fits the assigned requirements.

AFTER TEST:  Go to our computer Mini Lab, or your own computer and work on Informative Speech research --start working on a Topic Outline **    Find five different sources with information about your topic.  Before noon, send an email with:  (a) A statement about your Informative Speech's planned organizational pattern (topical, spatial, or chronological), (b) a list of several main points, as facts that you believe will go into your Informative Speech, and (c) a References list -- in APA style -- of at least five different initial sources you found.  Send this as an attachment to rtv309@yahoo.com -- See subject and file name guidelines as noted above.  The final Informative Outline and References page, is then due by Sunday, and your speech's Final Draft full-sentence outline, with references page and note card are due as noted below -- hard copy at 9 am Wednesday, with speeches done Friday.

** Submit your final draft résumé as an attachment and a one-paragraph 'business analysis' within the email -- by 10 pm Friday. 
The business analysis is a paragraph where you describe what the position is, how you feel qualified for it, how this business compares to similar businesses where you might apply for jobs and why this position and this company appeals to you compared to any others.


Day 9, Friday 12/28/12

In class today: 
9 am – 4-minute Motivational Speeches.  Remember, speeches cannot be made up if you are absent. 
10:00 am -- Group Project 1
11:00 -- Parliamentary Procedure group activity

Identify and finalize Persuasive topics--start doing research.  REMEMBER:  (a) Correct APA style required for at least six different sources -- half of which must be NON-URL citations, (b) selection and statement of 'proposition type' required, and (c) selection and statement of organizational pattern required.  See textbook.  Our book talks about these persuasive organizational patterns:  (a) problem-solution, (b) refutation, (c) motivated sequence or (d) comparative advantages.  OR -- YOU MAY USE:  the Reflective or Proposition to Proof approach as described here -- where they also review Motivated Sequence.  Be sure to read below how to avoid a 'D' or 'F' speech grade.

Start reading Chaps. 15-29 for Test 3.  Continue work on Informative Speech topic outline with References list and note card, with Informative final draft outline due by SundaySee subject and file name guidelines as noted above.

Group project evaluation Evaluate the group activity from Friday's class (500-700 words).  Review Chapters 32 and 35 as well as information from class notes and related PowerPoint about group communication, and write your assessment of how the group activity worked based on these concepts.  In addition to a general discussion of what took place and how you and your partner did as well as how the overall group did...What role(s) did you play?  What role(s) did others play?  What functional roles and what dysfunctional roles emerged?  What communication techniques were effective?  Which were not effective?  What form of leadership was there?  etc.--> use other similar concepts from group communication issues covered in class and the text to guide your evaluation--show that you understand and can apply the concepts, BUT ALSO apply the other communication terms and issues you have learned this semester that apply to group communications.  This is to be a critical analysis referring to communication issues and processes you experienced during the group activity--it is not just an opinion paper.  Here is a link to the 'Group Communication' PowerPoint and to parliamentary procedure.

Review these Top 10 Bad Presentation Mistakes   -- See Informative Speech requirements and deadlines.  10 min. Informative Outline and References in correct APA style due by 10 pm Sunday 12/30 to rtv309@yahoo.com.  See subject and file name guidelines as noted above.  You must have a minimum of six references, half of which must be traditional, retrievable, non-URL citations.

Informative and Persuasive Speech Preparation
FOR MAJOR SPEECHES:
An 'A' Speech:  Falls within a presentation time of 9:00 to 10:30 with proper balance of all elements, has a clear organizational pattern that is effectively implemented, has clear citations of several sources -- used throughout the speech, has correct APA style in the outline, has met all required deadlines, uses effective presentation (including attire and presentation aids) and delivery techniques throughout the speech, has an effective attention-getter and clincher, and has an outline and note card that are properly developed and used.
A 'B' Speech:  Has all these same elements but has some errors in such areas as organization or presentation.
A 'C' Speech:  Has all these same elements but may have (a) missed a deadline, (b) submitted materials that were not done as assigned, (c) not used the required presentation aids, (d) cited some sources but not throughout the speech and/or not effectively, (e) had some APA style correct but had significant APA style errors, (f) had a well planned presentation but that was not well presented -- showing possible lack of practice, (g) if the Persuasive Speech, has missed putting the required information on the outline about Proposition type and Organizational structure an/or has failed to properly develop these in the speech, or (h) similar deficiencies in overall planning and implementation of the speech.
A 'D' or 'F' Speech:  Is often characterized by a presentation that (a) does not cite sources or only marginally cites sources, (b) does not have the required number and style of sources listed on a References page and cited in the speech outline, (c) does not have a completely-developed full sentence outline and References page, (d) had an unapproved or past-the- final-deadline topic change, (e) missed multiple submission deadlines, (f) shows no significant preparation in either content or presentation, or (g) shows any other issues related to significant lack of effort for the project. 
Speech grades are also affected by other issues, such as speech length as presented, as noted elsewhere.

Week 3      Mock Job Interviews and Informative Speech Presentation

REMEMBER:  Your speeches must be your own work -- using 'sample speeches' copied from the Internet or a speech prepared for another class (by you or someone else) is plagiarism.  Speech sources must be mostly from 2009-2010, and must be ones you looked up yourself for this assignment.  Speech content will be evaluated using on online plagiarism-checking system and by other means. Plagiarizing a speech causes failure of the course.  A good speech is about the right preparation as much as it is about the right delivery.  YOUR SPEECH GRADE AND COURSE GRADE WILL BE CHANGED LATER if any plagiarism is discovered at a later time.  Content verification is often not done until after the semester has ended.

GRADING REMINDERS: correct and on-time submission of correct preparation work has the greatest impact of anything on project grades.  All final materials (final draft résumé, job application information and business analysis) for the interview were due by Friday 12/28.  The group project analysis was due Friday but as noted in class could be submitted as late as Sunday 12/30.  The final draft Informative Speech outline with sources was due emailed, complete, by Sunday.  Improper or incomplete sources has a major grade impact -- as noted above in the Major Speech Grading description, it notes: " A 'D' or 'F' Speech:  Is often characterized by a presentation that (a) does not cite sources or only marginally cites sources, (b) does not have the required number and style of sources listed on a References page and cited in the speech outline, (c) does not have a completely-developed full sentence outline and References page..."

The course syllabus says, among other details about late or non-submitted work:  "Deadlines:  Work not turned in on time will be late regardless of the reason—it is your responsibility to meet the deadline regardless of technical or other problems. Deadlines are always at the beginning of class in which anything is due. Work submitted incomplete will be marked as not submitted."

Note for the Informative Speech emailed outline and materials due by Sundayyou will lose 10 points from the project grade for each day this week not submitted as assigned.  If you email an outline that is incomplete, including not having a References page in correct style, you will lose 10 points each day until it is submitted as assigned.  We began the course with this sample showing what correct References style looks like, and links to support sites for correct APA style.

Today before you leave: submit a hard copy rough draft (topic) outline for the Persuasive Speech that includes at least six references, half of which must be non-URL, traditional, retrievable sources.  Final draft of materials due by Saturday.

THE FINAL COURSE REQUIREMENT:

Write 1+ page(s) (300+ words) of  evaluation of the Mock Job Interview.  List and discuss: (a) did you submit your resume and business analysis to the instructor on time?  (b)  did you meet with anyone at Career Development prior to your interview time (for guidance, research, etc.) and submit your final draft resume to the the interviewer at the time of your interview? -- discuss any discrepancies of either, (c) What job position did you turn in with your hard copy resume -- how qualified are you for that job?  (d) Was your appearance for the interview: casual, business casual, or professional?  Describe what you wore.  Discuss how you felt about your appearance.  (e) What time and day was your interview scheduled and what time did you arrive?  How were you greeted?  How long did you have to wait?  How much did this feel like a real interview?  (f)  Describe the initial meeting and conversation with the interviewer.  Was it someone you knew?  How well did you do in making your initial impression?  In a real interview, would this have been positive for you, or what would you want to do differently? Provide specifics.   (g)  What questions were you asked that you were well-prepared for?  (h)  What questions were you asked that you were NOT well-prepared for?  Describe how you handled those.  (h)   How effective was your non-verbal / body language?  (i) how effective was  your voice and verbal communication?  (j) Describe how well you think the interviewer conducted the interview.  (k) When you go on a real job interview, what will you do better?  (l) How useful was this activity for you?  Offer any other relevant comments.
