Faculty Bio

Dr. Tami Morton has been teaching at Texas A & M University-Commerce since 2012. As a member of the Curriculum and Instruction department, her concentration has been in reading. She received her Ph.D. from the University of North Texas in Denton, TX. That is where she was able to focus on her understanding and appreciation of reading and literacy. She worked under the direction of her chair, Dr. Janelle Mathis, who also had a great connection and interest in children's and adolescent literature.

Dr. Morton has experience teaching kindergarten and first grade. Her experiences with the primary grades provided her starting place in the classroom. After teaching, she decided to explore school materials publishing, and worked at Harcourt, Inc. (which is currently Harcourt MacMillian). It was there that she was able to focus on curriculum at several grade levels. All of her experiences have led to her current position as an Assistant Professor working in the teacher education program. She continues to research many areas connected to literacy, with a focus on children's and adolescent literature, multicultural literature, as well as foundation of reading instruction.
