Presentation Abstract

A graduate Technology Management program at a US regional university recently responded to a need to enhance its marketing ability to attract more students to the program. Recognizing the benefit of academic credentials in the workplace, the program devised and instituted two Graduate Certificate programs to compliment the Master of Science Degree Program in Technology Management. The new Graduate Certificate in Technology Leadership was devised to align with the degree program’s core and provide added value for students. The new Graduate Certificate in Organizational Planning was devised to compliment the degree program core and expand student’s exposure to topics related to the certificate’s concentration. The ability to utilize the courses for both the degree or certificate programs provides additional gateways into the master’s program and provides a greater return on investment for students opting to pursue a combination of these. The presentation will provide the audience with a description of the process undertaken to devise and determine the programmatic alignment of these certificates. The considerations for maximizing the value of the certificates for both the department and students will be discussed. Questions and comments from the audience are encouraged to facilitate a richer discussion. Major points to be addressed include:

• Make the graduate technology program offerings more marketable and attractive to students.
• Retain elective credit hour generation within the department by utilizing electives offered within the degree program.
• Create value-added options and a greater return on investment for students in the master’s program.
• Encourage students to expand knowledge in the field through the completion of concentration-related electives.
• Permit a stage of completion for students not meeting all requirements for the degree program.

Attendees can draw from the experiences of the implementing department to inform the development of program models for marketing and value enhancement for their own programs.
