Abstract Number 3

Pack, Thomas. (Dec. 2000).  Human search engines: the next killer app?.
EContent, 23(6), 16-22.

The author refers to sites that give human interaction as the human search engine.  Some of these can be Q&A or interaction between an expert.  A few of these sites charge a fee, and others are free.  One site that is mentioned is a site the allows the user to post and question, and the expert can bid on whether or not you want them to answer your question or give you advice.  EXP.COMA offers access to more than 100,000 free-lance experts in three major categories: Business, Technology, and Personal Interests.  Keen.com provides advice over the phone.  Users are able to browse or search the categories, and then click on  “Call Now.”  This site will then connect you for a live phone conversation.  The experts charge by the minute.  Some experts offer recorded responses on this site.  WebHelp.com offers online chat sessions.  They don’t answer questions directly, but they offer other sites where you can find relevant information.  Some sites offer free advice, and have point competitions for experts.  If the expert can answer a lot of questions they receive points.  The prizes range anywhere from money to merchandise.   Sites are being created all of the time for this type of service.  If online technology gets easier, then people will use these more and more for professional and personal advice.

I am a little nervous about anything that requires you to pay over the Internet.   How do you know for sure that you are getting what you pay for?  I hope that in my search for articles that I can become more confident about using the web as a means for purchasing items or information.  For now, I will stick to the free sites.  I feel it is wonderful that there are people who take the time to offer free services to provide information to those who are seeking truth.
