A closer look at the Big Ten Curves.  The rails undergo a considerable change in elevation throughout the curves.

The Ski Train approaches the end of the Clay Siding as the westbound mixed freight returns to it's task of gaining elevation on the front range.
rgst086-BigTen-s.jpg (13891 bytes) This picture shows the middle section of the double horse-shoe curves making up the Big Ten Curves.  On the far curve, partially obstructed from view by the growth of small trees, is a row of hopper cars filled with dirt and permanently placed adjacent to the main line to serve as a wind break.

Here, we continue our descent to Denver as the engines round the bend leading into the approach to the upper, and much tighter, curve of the Big Ten.
rgst088-BigTen-deer-s.jpg (17537 bytes) Deer, feeding next to the tracks in the curve, don't even bother to look up as we pass by.

Michelle, the Ski Train Volunteer on our car, assists passengers exiting Mount Massive.

This concludes this edition of my virtual photoalbum of the Ski Train's 1998 Summer Excursion.  I hope you've enjoyed the tour as much as I have making it available.  If you are indeed a railfan, or "foamer" as the rail crews refer to us, I hope you find the other information and pictures throughout my websites interesting and useful.  For trackside images of this incredible rail line, please continue on to my Moffat Road Pages.  Thanks for visiting!!!   -Jason
