Option B: Participate in these online activities instead of coming to class on October 12 & 19. Enrollment in this online version is limited to Collins, Edwards, Jimenez, Matthews, Townsend & Wright. 

For Thursday, October 12:

  1. Read Gunning (2005). Chapter 6 Comprehension: Theories & Strategies

  2. Find 10 key words in chapter 6 - write the word and its definition. Email these to Josh_Thompson@tamu-commerce.edu before 5pm Monday, October 9. This is your "ticket" into this online option. 

  3. Answer the 10 multiple choice questions in chapter 6 of the Gunning textbook website. Select "Submit answers for grading", fill in your name (at the bottom of the results page), and then email me the results. Due 5pm Wednesday, October 11. 

  4. Which techniques for teaching comprehension strategies do you think would be most effective? Why?  Send your short answer to this question in the body of an email to members of your online discussion group; include me in your group. Use "524 discussion" in the subject line. Due 5pm Wednesday, October 11.

For Thursday, October 19:
  1. Read Gunning (2005) Chapter 7 Text Structures and Teaching Procedures and Comprehension Questions.pdf
  2. Describe 10 different strategies for teaching comprehension with your online discussion group, 5 from Gunning and 5 from anywhere else (cite sources). Share these with your online discussion group; include me in your group. Use "524 strategies" in the subject line. due 5pm Monday, October 16.
  3. Reflect on your peers' comments in the online discussion group, from last week and this. Use this rubric (Indicators of critical (+) and uncritical (-) thinking within online discussion forums) to evaluate your contributions to the online discussion group. Due 5pm, Wednesday, October 18.  (Monday, October 16 clarification: send your evaluation to the discussion group). 
  4. to be determined by Friday, October 13  YIKES! It's Saturday, October 14 already. So from here on, you are invited, not required to complete these activities: Read this Comprehension Booklet .pdf Compare the principles of the Comprehension Booklet with the strategies discussed by your online discussion group, including yours. Type a compare / contrast paper (~2-3 pages). Due - if you so choose to participate - on Monday, 10/23.
  5. Teach a child a new strategy - come into class on Thursday, Oct 26 and tell us all about it!

Practice ( model, mini-model, mini-lesson ) a comprehension strategy and reflect on its effectiveness with a small group of other class members.

Exam on Comprehension

Compile a notebook (list, file folder, recipe box, MS Excel Worksheet) of reading comprehension strategies. Include ways to introduce new strategies to children of various ages and different stages of reading development; assessments; intervention; and resources.
