Collaboration

The feedback from each student about things that work and do not work in their classrooms

I don’t like how at times we are cut-off when we speak because we can be rushed.

Student-led

Have found that I have a harder time incorporating new mangement theories/tools than I would have imagined – I suppose reason is that habits can be pretty intractable

I feel that it would have been more effective to read the textbooks at a slower pace.

Cooperative learning

More talk about actual experiences

Discussions on theorist is helpful, but not enough depth on love & logic.

An understanding teacher

Feedback – ways & means

Enjoyed the strategies & activities to create good classroom management

Would like to have known how to write classroom rule & consequences

Liked the group presentation

Loved the flexibility

Courses desire to improve classroom discipline/ management

Love the open learning environment. It makes me want to come to class & learn.

Discussion was very beneficial

Presenters were good about making presentations & activities engaging

I like how at times we get to hear experiences from people that are already in a classroom.

ExchangeEveryday:Everyone Knows a Future Bully

March 8, 2007

The best way to destroy an enemy is to make him a friend.
Abraham Lincoln

I encourage everyone to visit www.voicesforchildren.ca and download their February 2007 publication entitled, “Binoculars on bullying: A new solution to protect and connect children” by Dr. Debra Pepler of York University and Dr. Wendy Craig of Queen’s University. These researchers are internationally-renowned for their work on bullying and they also happen to be my colleagues.

Each time, I talk with them about bullying, I always learn something new. I hope you will as well.

The article discusses bullying in the context of relationships. Too often, we consider bullying as a set of behaviors that have little to do with relationships. Yet, the research is clear that the solution to bullying is relationship-based. The authors provide several strategies for adults to build healthy relationships with children and to prevent bullying. These strategies are appropriate for inclusion in adult education courses focused on positive guidance with young children.

bulletProtect children from bullying by giving them strategies to make friends in positive ways
bulletTurn children from negative into positive leaders
bulletMake a distinction between “telling an adult to get children into trouble” versus “telling an adult to get a child out of trouble”
bulletStructure groups to support pro-social networks
bulletBe a role model

To learn more about relationship-based solutions to bullying, see www.voicesforchildren.ca and the Canadian Initiative for the Prevention of Bullying www.cipb.ca

Paper

2/13 New schedule for our semester (see above) - we made our management model presentation groups.

For Tues, 2/28, prepare for an exam on the Classroom Management from Charles & Wolfgang. The objective section will have multiple choice, fill in the blank, matching, & short answer. Prepare an essay question from your management model. Type it. Bring two copies. You will be paired with another, not from your model. Together with your pair, you will answer his/her question.

The second half of the evening will be devoted to group work. I will spend ~15 minutes w/ each group before you are dismissed.

2/2 Interpreting Observations

A discussion was started in class about the feasibility of doing the classroom observation part of our assignment. I encourage you all to join me in my Virtual Office to discuss the relevance of the assignment.
