Workshop Overview

You may have seen Karl Fisch and Scott McLeod's video "Shift Happens," which chronicles the rapid and ongoing changes that make the world our students will enter following graduation very different from anything we can now imagine. These changes are forcing us to rethink the classroom--at all levels and in all disciplines.

The objective of this day-long professional development workshop is to explore together--via multiple concurrent sessions--the shape and function of the 21st century classroom that is "full of shift." We invite English and History teachers to join us, as we explore writing, research, history, and technology choices that will help prepare our students for this changing world: in college and beyond.

Participants will be given the choice of a multitude of sessions, each led by A&M-Commerce faculty (in English, History, Art, and our university Library) and area teachers in English and History. Please see "schedule" for a brief description of each offering. The day will end with a showing at our new Planetarium and a reception at our beautiful new Science Building.

  Who Should Attend

English and History teachers at area high schools and community colleges. All attendees will receive Professional Development Certificates from Texas A&M-Commerce, and interested participants are eligible for six clock hours (.6 CEU's) from Texas A&M-Commerce. Participants interested in pursuing graduate study with us (MA or PhD in English or MA in History) will receive information and support.

  Cost

This event is being offered FREE OF CHARGE for teachers in the A&M-Commerce area. Both breakfast and lunch will be provided at no cost to you or your district. In addition, each participant will walk away from this event with a binder of educational materials.
