The Depots of the St. Louis Southwestern and Texas Midland Railways

Minimum recommended viewing resolution: 1024x768

Fortunately, a gentleman by the name of Ed Cooper had the interest and foresight to document the rail activity around the Commerce area while attending school at East Texas State University (now Texas A&M University-Commerce) in the early 1970's.  Ed has graciously permitted me to feature some of his pics on my site.  Credit for most of these photos goes to him.  Thanks Ed!!!

Cotton Belt/Texas Midland Belt Union Depot
Commerce Union Depot was shared by the Texas Midland and Saint Louis Southwestern Railways.  The two railroads also shared the Union Depot in the neighboring city of Greenville.  By agreement, the Texas Midland operated the Commerce Depot and the Cotton Belt operated the Greenville Depot.  In this photo, taken from the Park Street crossing, the Texas Midland tracks can be seen running to the left of the station and the train is occupying the SSW line.

This photo taken by Ed Cooper from the cab of Robert McFatridge's engine shows the old Sherman Branch extending straight ahead and the active main curving to the left of the depot.  This is fireman's view on the Eastern (railroad North) approach to the last Union Depot in Commerce at the West (RR South) end of the yard.  Geographically, the photo is actually taken looking West-Northwest toward the Park Street Crossing.

Side Note:  The curve in front of the depot was the sharpest curve on the Commerce and Dallas Subs.

Eastbound (railroad North) view of the depot from Park Street on March 21, 1973.  This was not the first depot in Commerce... its predecessor stood in roughly the same location and was removed in the early-mid 1900's.  (If/when I can track down specific dates I'll revise my commentaries.)  The Texas Midland freight depot can be seen in the distance to the left of the truck backed up to the North (left) side of the depot.  This structure is still standing.

The Cotton Belt Depot in Commerce, Texas as seen from the South-west (Park Street) on September 28, 1996, following it's destruction by fire on September 14, 1996.  There is no trace of the structure today.
