Moffat Tunnel is equipped with large 9' diameter
fans, driven by 1500 horse power electric motors, that move approximately 450,000 CFM to
evacuate exhaust from the tunnel once a train exits the tunnel.
They also force fresh air needed by the engines of the next train into the tunnel.
Until the '80's, 19' and 21' diameter squirrel cage fans were used. The roar of the fans echoing through the valley is
incredible. If you're at the portal and the fans kick on, get your cameras ready once they
go off. (The fans do not run with a train occupying the tunnel.) Many thanks to Kenny Dunn, UP's Moffat Tunnel Supervisor, for the updated info on the fans. July 1997 (top) June 5, 1999 (bottom) |
