On a kindergarten/first grade reading level.  His lack of comprehension comes from childhood brain damage.  From appearance, DJ seems like an ordinary child.  Due to his brain damage, he can mostly retain info for short-term.  Not often, he can remember from previously learned lessons.  Visual activity works best for him.
