Managing literacy centers today means using scientifically based (and evidence based) reading research in planning and delivering developmentally appropriate instruction that reaches all learners. Through managing centers, teachers create a literacy-rich environment that fosters the emerging literacies of diverse learners in the early childhood classroom, when it really matters!
Grouping students based on regular, on-going authentic assessments creates meaningful, task-oriented arrangements of students and tasks. Selection of appropriate leveled texts and activities connects lessons to the immediate, specific needs of this small group of learners. Diverse activities around the room engage learners working away from the teacher in substantive tasks, developing specific skills while also supporting the cultivation of self-perpetuating learning skills.
