Wikipedia: A literary genre is a category of literary compositions. Genres may be determined by technique, tone, content, or length. According to Anderson (2006) there are six categories of children's literature (with some significant sub-genres):
- Picture books, including concept books that teach the alphabet or counting for example, pattern books, and wordless books.
- Traditional literature, including folktales, which convey the legends, customs, superstitions, and beliefs of people in previous civilizations. This genre can be further broken into sub-genres: myths, fables, legends, and fairy tales
- Fiction, including fantasy, realistic fiction, and historical fiction
- Non-fiction
- Biography and autobiography
- Poetry and verse

Admitedly, Scholastic.com has a profit motive, but they do provide a great number of resources and ideas. Here's some info on genres and choosing books:

My favorite book fair these days is Usborne Books, sponsored by Stephanie Walle. She has brought books to Commerce for our annual Bill Martin Jr Symposium and to Midlothian for Kids' College.
Another favorite online book seller is Bookvine for Children www.bookvine.com. Isabel Baker is author of "The Reading Chair" a regular feature in Young Children: Journal of Texas Association for the Education of Young Children.

Objective 2. Application of early literacy to basic developmental domains of infants & toddlers.
The Texas Early Learning Council created the Infant / Toddler Early Learning Guidelines recently, and published them titled Little Texans, Big Futures www.littleTexans.org. There they view the child's developmental domain, and specify components of each domain, and then suggest appropriate behaviors that children might exhibit, and strategies for caregivers and parents to implement to support or stimulate development.
