Language leads us together

http://faculty.tamuc.edu/jthompson/536

Presentation for TAMU-Commerce Social Change Conference on Thursday, 02/23/2023 @ 10am in RSC Innovation B

Language leads us together. We learn to talk through interaction with our earliest caregivers. They don't just teach us words, but the ways words work. All this early language acquisition shapes the ways we think about ourselves and the world. Some experience language that defines and restricts them, becoming an “us versus them” mentality. Others experience early language as an avenue to explore and experience sameness and differences.

Early Language

A story of early language acquisition, a lullaby heard in the night, across the world, over the equator, and into the jungle

What's your story? How did language come to you? What was your early language environment like?

A quote from Atlas of the Heart by Brené Brown: Language is a portal that transports us to a universe of new choices and second chances—a universe where we can share the stories of our bravest and most heartbreaking moments with each other in a way that builds connection.
