Dr. Marta Mercado-Sierra and Dr. Josh Thompson will lead a session on addressing the issues of social justice in higher education. Some people feel we need to transcend the social justice discourse in Higher Education. They aspire to embrace the ideas of inclusion, equity, and diversity towards social justice in higher education. But can they do so without examining and dismantling the practices of oppression, discrimination, and privilege in our everyday life? In this forum, we will take the time, as a community of advocates for change in higher education, to examine practices throughout the academic system. Many time-honored ways we work in higher education actually exclude, chastise, colonize, exploit or disenfranchise community members in our campuses. Come prepared to share experiences, ideas, strategies, services, activities, and practices that can move us towards a more just organizational culture and advance social justice.
